Chapter Abstract

The next generation of wireless cellular systems is expected to meet unparalleled requirements in terms of data transfer speed, flexibility, coverage, power efficiency, reliability, and quality of service. Achieving these ambitious goals while simultaneously employing cost-effective and efficient technologies necessitates a fundamental revision of the design and deployment paradigms of wireless communication systems. In this framework, wireless communication generations have traditionally been upgraded by improving the technological solutions adopted for the implementation of the user terminals and the provider base stations and networks, while the propagation environment has been typically viewed as an uncontrollable element of the wireless scenario. However, the emerging paradigm of the smart electromagnetic environment (SEME) is challenging this perspective.
