Title: Optimization Methods for Electromagnetic Diagnostics of Civil Infrastructures (OMCI)
Date: 15 September – 19 December 2025 (5 h/week)
Teachers: MASSA Andrea, ROCCA Paolo
Website: https://www.eledia.org/eledia-unitn/course/omci/
Why are inverse problems so notoriously difficult to solve?
Because they are ill-posed and non-linear — two subtle issues that can challenge even the most advanced optimization algorithms!
The Master Course is taught in 🇬🇧️ ENGLISH and is offered
- On-site
- On-line (synchronous and asynchronous)
Video recordings, hand-outs, etc. of the lectures will be available off-line!
In this course, you will explore:
- Why inverse problems are often unstable and highly sensitive to noise
- How non-linearity “bends” the cost function surface and complicates the search for optimal solutions
- Regularization techniques to cope with ill-posedness
- Optimization algorithms tailored to the challenges of electromagnetic diagnostics
- Real-world applications to structural monitoring and non-destructive evaluation
From theory to implementation, you will learn to model and solve problems where data alone is not enough — and where smart algorithms make the difference.
Teaching Activities:
- Theoretical Lessons
- e-Xam Self Assessment (each teaching class or periodically)
- MATLAB Hands-On
- e-Xam Final Assessment
Fees:
UniTN Students: FREE
EXTERNAL Students:
- 216€ : First course
- 180€ : Every course from the second one
The fees include the course teaching, slides/material, and video recordings.
