The ELEDIA Research Center is pleased to announce the upcoming IEEE AP-S Distinguished Lecturer Seminar by Prof. Atif SHAMIM<\/a><\/strong> (KAUST, Saudi Arabia), titled \u201cFlexible, Wearable, and Disposable Wireless Communication and Sensing Systems Through Additive Manufacturing<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The seminar, organized in the framework of the IEEE AP\/ED\/MTT North Italy Chapter, will be held on April 30th, 2026 at 15:00 (Italy Time – GMT+2).
It will take place onsite in Room 1L, Department of Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering, Via Mesiano 77, Trento, and will also be available online at the following link<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abstract:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

With the advent of wearable sensors and the Internet of Things (IoT), there is a growing focus on electronics that can be bent, stretched, and conformally integrated onto the human body or mounted on non-planar objects. Considering the massive scale of deployment\u2014often reaching billions of devices\u2014there is a critical need for extremely low-cost solutions, potentially enabling disposable electronics. These requirements can be effectively addressed through additive manufacturing technologies such as inkjet and screen printing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This talk introduces additive manufacturing as an emerging approach to realize low-cost, flexible, and wearable wireless communication and sensing systems. The capability to print electronics on unconventional substrates such as plastics, paper, and textiles opens up a wide range of innovative applications. Several antenna and sensor designs based on these techniques will be presented, including multilayer printing processes where dielectric and conductive materials are integrated to achieve fully printed components. The use of novel functional inks for tunable and reconfigurable devices will also be discussed, followed by system-level demonstrations of wireless sensing applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, the seminar will highlight the transition from fundamental research to real-world products, showcasing how printed electronics can lead to scalable industrial solutions. These advances suggest a future where electronics can be manufactured as easily as newspapers through roll-to-roll processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
